Crossing a line

Papatoetoe Sports Centre. The name didn’t do it somehow. A local council amenity perhaps? Certainly not an exciting, uber-modern, multi-sports arena and venue for major regional, national and international events to inspire sporting participation and achievement at all levels. Yet this is was the vision.

We challenged stakeholders about a new name as well as the difference between participating and competing in sport. There were arguments on all sides of that one.

The new name, Kolmar, holds local historical relevance assuring continued support from the local community. And the story we wove around Kolmar being the ‘Home of Competition’ invites reflection on what it means to be a good competitor – winner or loser. The white line, the chalk, separates one from the other. Yet you can’t have one, without the other.
